Abstract: Information retrieval is currently one of the most important usages of the Internet. Scientific publishers are one of the sources of information, providing access to digital libraries on a subscription basis. Contracts between publishers and larger organizations specify how access is to be regulated. This paper explores the legal implications and technical considerations of the use of soft-ware agents to facilitate on- and off-campus access to the ScienceDirect digital library.
